This is a free crochet pattern to make your own watermelon style pet bed. It can be made for cats, dogs or any other pets as the instructions are written in a way which allow you to make the bed any size. It’s a really simple pattern so it’s perfect for beginners and it doesn’t take long to make.

You can use any weight yarn to make it, for reference I’ve used chunky yarn (Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky) and the amount you will need is dependant on how big you make the bed. You’ll need green and pink yarn with a small amount of black to add on the seeds at the end. I’ve used a 5.5mm hook for the chunky yarn, if you’re using a different weight you should use the recommended hook size for that yarn.

Pixel enjoying her new bed!

The Base

Round 1:  Using pink yarn 6 sc into a magic ring. (6)

Round 2: 6 inc (12)

Round 3: *1 sc, inc* Repeat to end of round (18)

Round 4: *2 sc, inc* Repeat to end of round (24)

Round 5: *3 sc, inc* Repeat to end of round (30)

Round 6: *4 sc, inc* Repeat to end of round (30)

Continue increasing rounds in this way until the base is the required size (test it out by having you pet lie on it). Once you have completed this, sl st with the first sc of the previous round and fasten off.

The outer cushion

Using green yarn ch 23 (23 chains is suitable for a cat bed, if you are making the bed bigger you may want to do extra chains to make the cushion thicker), Sl st with the 1st ch. Sc into every stitch, continue working sc around to form a tube which is long enough to fit around the base you have created.

I suggest stuffing the tube as you work as you may find it difficult to stuff it once it is complete.

Once the tube is the correct size and fully stuffed, sl st with the starting chain and fasten off.

Construction

Using a yarn needle, sew the outer cushion on to the base. Then use the black yarn to embroider on the seeds.
